Herbal/Ayurvedic uses of sensitive plant (छुईमुई के आयुर्वेदिक गुण)

Shying is common in human and some intellectual animals. But there is a plant that also gets shy, this plant shrinks or closes its leaves to protect itself when someone tries to touch it. This sensitive plant, also known as Touch Me Not or Shy Plant is native to South & Central America. Now this plant can also be found in Florida, Hawaii, Georgia, East Asia etc. almost everywhere on this earth. It is a beautiful flowering shrub that can also be planted in small pots. Perhaps the plant is small but has amazing healing powers.

Let’s know this plant in depth:

Botanical Details:

Latin Name: Mimosa Pudica Linn.

English Name: Sensitive Plant (Touch me not)

Sanskrit Name: Lajjalu (लज्जालु)/ Shami Patra (शमीपत्र)

Hindi Name: Lajjalu (लज्जालु)/Chuimui (छुईमुई)


Plant Description:

A dark green colored thorny herb which spreads either on ground or few centimeters above it is placed. It bears pink-purple flowers. It flowers in rainy season and bears fruit in winter.

Parts Used for herbal purpose:

whole plant, Roots, Leaves, Stem and Seeds


Taste: Bitter-Astringent


Chemical Constituents:

Leaves Contains:

Stigma Sterol, Leucoantho cyaniding, Flavon, Glycoside, Alkaloid Mimosine.

Seeds contain:

Mucilage & Free Aminoacids

Seed Oil Contains:

Linolic Acid, Oleic Acid, Palmitic Acid, Oleic Acid, Palmitic acid, Stearic acid & behenic Acid


Cooling, pungent, carminative, valunerary, alexipharmic, resolvent, diuretic, febrifuge.

Used in:

Hemorrhagic diseases Diarrhoea, Gynecological disorder, Sinus, Sores, Piles, Fistula, Gravels, Urinary Complaints, Cough, Dyscrasia, Leucoderma.


Fresh Juice: 10-20ml

Decoction: 50-100ml, in divided doses, per day


Important Terms:

Please read these terms carefully & familiar with it, these terms helps to understand the herbal uses of plant more conveniently:

Panchang (पंचांग):

पंचांग – साधारण भाषा में किसी पौधे के जड़, तना, पत्ते, फल, फूल और बीज सभी भागों को आयुर्वेदिक दवा के लिए उपयोग करना पंचांग कहलाता है|

‘Panchang’ is an Ayurvedic term which means the whole herb including roots (means using all parts root, stem leaves, seed or fruit and flower altogether for herbal use).

Decoction (काढ़ा):

Decoction is herbal medicinal liquid generally prepared by boiling some parts of herb in water for specific time.

Method to prepare decoction of sensitive plant:

Pour 5gms Panchang (or root, stem and leaves) in 400gms water and boil until 100gms left in container then sieve this liquid; your decoction is ready now. Use as recommended in below remedies.

छुईमुई के पौधे का काढ़ा बनाने की विधि :  

5 ग्राम छुईमुई के पंचांग (जड़, तना, पत्ते, फल, फूल आदि सभी हिस्से) को 400 ग्राम पानी में तब तक उबालें की बर्तन में 100 ग्राम पानी ही बाकी रह जाए | इस 100ग्राम पानी को काढे की तरह उपयोग किया जाता है |

Poultice (लेप या प्रलेप):


किसी पौधे को सिल-बट्टे या खरल में पीसकर उसका लेप बनाया जाता है |

Poultice is an herbal paste made by grinding some parts of herb and then mixing this grinded/crushed material or powder with water or recommended oil. Sometimes two or more herbs & some other herbal liquids/juices are also added to make the poultice more effective.

Home remedies of Sensitive Plant:


Cure for Cough:

Make paste by grinding the roots of sensitive plant and simply lick it to cure cough.

Take a small root of sensitive plant, wash it and suck it for some time and repeat the process for few days.

Diabetes Control:


Diabetes is a silent killer and care is needed to control it, sensitive plant has healing powers to control diabetes.

Take 100ml decoction of this sensitive plant regularly to control diabetes, it will balance the sugar level.


Make Powder of Panchang (whole plant or leaves, stem & roots) of sensitive plant and take 5 gms powder daily empty stomach to control diabetes.

This method also gives benefit in enlarged heart (cardiomegaly) and kidney enlarge/shrink.

For Sagging Breast/ Breast Cancer:

Female breast sagging is a natural consequence of ageing, Smoking, breast-feeding are some other causes of sagging breast. Sagging breast are major problem for young women now days as breasts are primary part for figure maintenance.

Breasts are made up of fatty tissues and glands to produce milk and are not muscles; the presence of protein elastin makes them elastic.

Taking medicines or using chemical oils are not the best solution to firm the sagging breasts as these cosmetics always play with natural beauty and harm your natural skin slowly with time.

Breast fibroids are the initial stage of breast diseases like breast cancer and surgery is the only option after suffering from breast cancer. But the use of sensitive plant dissolves the fibroids and prevents from breast cancer.

To tighten the breast and avoiding the formation of fibroids please follow this natural remedy:

Take the roots and leaves of sensitive plant and grind it to make paste.

Also take the roots of Winter Cherry (aka. Ashwagandha, Withania Somnifera) and grind it to make paste. (If this herb is not available, you can simply buy Ashwagandha roots powder from amazon)

Mix these two pastes; you can add water as per need

Now apply this paste on the loosend breasts and massage for some time, it helps in tighten the breasts & gives you beautiful shapely breasts without using any medicines & chemical oils, this process can be applied for any type of sagging skin.

Heavy Periods/ heavy bleeding/Piles:

Take 50-100 ml   decoction per day. Better if take 100ml decoction in divided doses few days.


Grind 3-4 gms roots of shy plant and make powder by crushing it

Mix this powder with yogurt and take at every morning

Helps in Sagging skin or tightening of skin:

Pour 10gms ‘Panchang’ of sensitive plant in 400 gms water boil until 400gms left and continuously heat up to make it more viscous; mix it with Vaseline and store this paste in refrigerator and massage daily on sagging skin.

Cure for Diarrhea:

Use Decoction of sensitive plant

Cure for Goiter:

Make poultice of roots and leaves of sensitive plant and apply it.

Cure for Tonsils:

use the paste of leaves of sensitive leaves of sensitive plant on throat (use externally only).

Cure for Hydrocele:

Boil leaves of this sensitive plant and then sieve the water; apply this water with cotton on affected area.


Apply the paste of leaves on affected area.

 All the experiments mentioned above are taken from Ayurveda and followed by standard ayurvedic books under the guidance of Ayurvedic doctors.  These experiments are recommended for general people and individually its effects can be varied.
